Distracted Potential

The Digital Revolution has re-drawn the boundaries of human growth. Anyone can become their most achieved self, but to do so they have to wade past the tide of distractions and achieve. The constant flood of social media, news, and entertainment has made it possible to be as busy as ever doing nothing. We can only imagine what music Mozart could have made with access to custom created instruments in a Digital Age. However, I can't help but wonder how many modern Mozarts there are that forget to try because they're too enthralled by the latest viral video.

  1. Great insight, Garret. I think you are right on. We all have to be sure the wonderful blessings of the digital age don't blind us to, or even make us lose the essential blessings and connections we are meant to treasure and learn from.

  2. Isn't that similar to the topic of the book Amusing Ourselves to Death. A true danger.

  4. I think you underestimate the truly special. There is a thousand times more innovation happening in the world right now than there was in Mozart's time, and it's being done by a thousand times more people. Don't discount the contributions of the few because of the lackadaisicalityness of the many.

Also, I don't think we can image Mozart's uncreated music, since we have no source material to make a copy from... :-D

  5. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing were said in Mozart's time. No doubt there were cavemen that complained their kids were wasting precious time running to and fro on them new-fangled wheels. "Don't they know the good they could accomplish if they stayed home being productive?" Granted, temptation to coast is more accessible now. But, those that succeed do so regardless of their environment or situation. Great people are never tethered for long.
